NYSPHSAA: Fall Sports delayed to September 21st start, championships scrapped

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association voted during their July 16th meeting to move the official start date of the Fall 2020 high school sports season to September 21st.

In addition, the fall regional and state championships for all fall sports have been cancelled, which in effect will result in seasons concluding with the Sectional Championships.

The delay of the fall sports season is conditional, dependent on the progress of New York State’s battle against coronavirus.

As such, the NYSPHSAA also announced with a condensed plan that could be implemented if guidance pushes towards a second shutdown or a cancellation of high-risk sports.

Under that condensed plan, the “fall sports” season would be inserted in the middle of the winter and spring seasons, played out in March and April, with state championships not played.

According to Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas, today’s vote shows a willingness of the NYSPHSAA to be flexible and explore alternative options while maintaining a strong focus on student safety.

The start of the season on September 21st will also feature a waiver on a 7-day practice rule while maintaining other practice requirements, including needing to log 10 practices prior to a team’s first contest.

The NYSPHSAA joins neighboring states such as New Jersey that have announced recently a delay to the upcoming 2020-21 high school sports calendar.
