Shelters of Saratoga set to open permanent Code Blue shelter Monday

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10)—After delays, the new Code Blue Shelter in Saratoga Springs is set to open at 5 pm Monday.

The new permanent facility is located at 4 Adelphi St. in Saratoga Springs. This new location is more convenient than the temporary location out in Milton.

Private shower rooms are part of the new Code Blue shelter.

The shelter is one large living space with separate sleeping areas for both men and women. There are private showers and bathrooms, an area to watch TV, and snacks.

On Monday people were delivering clothing items in preparation for the opening. The goal is for the shelter to stay open 24/7 until April.

Crews responding to fatal crash on Route 21B in Ghent

GHENT, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A 76-year-old East Greenbush man was killed in a one-car crash on County Route 21B in the Town of Ghent Monday morning, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office says 76-year-old Rodney Abele was driving north on County Route 21B around 10:14 Monday morning when he drove off the road for an unknown reason. His car hit a tree head-on and slipped down an embankment, before coming to a stop.

Abele, the car’s only occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Route 21B was closed for several hours following the crash, but has since been reopened.

14th annual Santa Speedo Sprint set for December 14

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The annual Santa Speedo Sprint will take off December 14 at 2 p.m. The event is held by the Albany Society for the Advancement of Philanthropy (ASAP). The race benefits the Albany Damien Center and the HIV/AIDS program at Albany Medical Center.

Last year, more than 1,000 people descended on Lark Street for some festive fun with 300 people taking part in the sprint. Over the past 13 years, $218,000 has been raised.

The racecourse will be Lark Street, starting and ending at Madison Ave. and registration will be held at both Lionheart on Madison Avenue and OhBar on Lark Street, starting at 11 a.m.

This year, you will be able to get some chowder or chili to warm up during and after the race. The Lark Street BID is holding its second annual Taste of Lark: Chili & Chowder – a chili and chowder tasting event, alongside the Albany Speedo Sprint.

Race participants will be encouraged to don Speedos and holiday-themed outfits.
