I recently paid my town taxes in Granville, NY. In past years, you were able to pay in person, ask any questions and get a receipt. Considering the ever increasing amount of taxes paid to these municipalities, it doesn't seem unreasonable to expect at least that. However, now in the town of Granville and I'm sure many other North Country towns, you're supposed to drop off your check in a "drop box". Town officials don't want to face the taxpayers who pay their salaries and want you to drop off your check like a good little citizen. I don't know about you, but when you're dropping off a check for over 17 hundred dollars, I'd like to at least get a receipt. Others in small towns in the North country who are outraged by this should run for the appropriate offices to help change practices like this. I know I'll be exploring these options as well!
